PG and Research Department of English

The unique feature of theDepartment of English ,Periyar EVR College is that it caters to the academic needs and aspirations of the students belonging to educationally, socially and economically backward sections.With a view to providing exposure to Language Studies and Literature to students mainly from rural areas in and around Trichy and the neighbouring Districts, B.A.English Literature (1969) and subsequently M.A. English Literature (1970) Courses were started. These Courses were subsequently named as B.A. English and M.A. English.

Owing to the high demand for English as a Course and with the vision to cater to more number of first generation students who can have access to affordable, quality education the Second Shift was started for the B. A. English Course in 2007. The sanctioned strength of students was raised from 30 to 60 for both Shift I and Shift II of B.A. English Course. M.Phil. English (Full-Time Course ) has been offered since 2008. The Ph.D. programme has been offered since 2012.The Department functions as a full-fledged P. G. and Research Department with six Ph.D. guides and nine M.Phil. guides.Since 2012, 15 Ph.D. candidates have obtained Ph.D. degrees through research work undertaken in the Department of English.The Department has 20 Staff members, of whom 8 have obtained a Ph. D., 19 have obtained an M.Phil. Degree, 10 have a Degree in Education, and two have a Post-graduate Diploma. The UGC NET has been cleared by one Staff member and SLET by four members .The Staff members publish books, articles in reputed National and International journals, serve as editors for National and International journals, publish research papers in various books ,conferences, edit books for publication, serve as Doctoral Committee members , as External Examiners, as Question paper setters for Government Examinations , conduct seminars , organize conferences and workshops through sponsoring agencies like UGC, ICSSR, TANSCHE. The Staff serve as Subject Experts, are invited as Resource persons for national and international Conferences,Seminars, Workshops, Association meetings, Special lectures and also serve as judges for literary, cultural and academic competitions held at various places in the State.6 Staff members are currently pursuing Doctoral studiesOne staff member was given Fellowship by UGC to pursue Ph. D under FIP under UGC XI plan. A number of Special lectures, Association meetings and screening of noteworthy films was undertaken for the benefit of students and research scholars . Eminent personalities in the fields of Literature, Fine Arts and Media enlightened the staff and students on relevant issues.2 U.G. Students and 2 P. G. Students have obtained University Ranks between 2011-2016. Students have participated and won prizes in various literary, co-curricular, academic, and cultural and quiz competitions held among colleges in the State and within the college.A large number of students participated and won prizes in various sports competitions like football, long jump, athletics, kabaddi,ball badminton, short put, volleyball, kho-kho, volley ball, cricket and hockey.More than hundred students have presented research papers in national and state level seminars and conferences held in the State.More than 30 students have cleared Government Exams between 2011-2016 and are currently serving in Government institutions.Students have attended Youth Empowerment programmes, Seminars, conferences, workshops, Awareness programmes, career guidance programmes.Foreign exchange student visits, and yoga programmes were held in the department.Students have enrolled under NCC, NSS, Red Ribbon Club, and Youth Red Cross, Eco-Lit Club, and have been rendering sincere service in the respective fields.Extension Activities are undertaken for students by field visits to neighbouring villages for bringing awareness about health, hygiene, sanitation, environmental protection.The Students who are predominantly from rural backgrounds and have had their schooling in the regional medium of instruction , Tamil, at school are compelled and encouraged to converse in English within the Department and college premises in order to improve their communication skills and to help them grasp the nuances of language and literature with ease.J Kalveen who registered in 2013-14 under Dr. Dhanalakshmihas obtained Government Fellowship to pursue his Ph.D.

The Courses offered aim to acquaint students with British Literature from the early times. The students are also taught teaching methods and linguistics. The students also take a paper in Postcolonial Studies introducing them to the Literatures of Africa, Australia, Canada, India and other colonized countries. A paper on Diaspora studies was introduced from 2008 onwards. New Literaturesare taught .Courses on Human Rights, B.P.O and Office Management, and Communication Skills are taught. Students are taught to communicate effectively in English using the Language Lab and the Audio-Visual Room, to equip them as teachers. Under the Tutorial system the students are guided and counselled outside class hours with regard to personal problems, stress, anxiety, health, academic performance, interpersonal issues, behavioural problems and so on. The Tutor takes interest in the difficulties faced by and observed in a student, to suggest remedies.
